The Senior Night ceremony went well but that's about where the good news
ended for the Panthers. The varsity dug a hole in the 1st quarter, after
which they battled the Lions even for most of the game. The Lions,
however, put on a spurt midway through the final quarter to put the game
out of reach.
The other Panther teams also dropped the final game of the season. The
JV and Freshmen Black games were nail biters but neither team could pull
it out down the stretch.
Varsity and Senior Night pictures are posted. The others are coming.

Panthers fall to Dekaney 79-71
This one got out of hand early. The Panthers continued to fight hard the
entire night but the athleticism of the Wildcats was too much for the
Panthers to overcome. Special kudos to Jordan Najvar for another strong
performance in the post! We appreciate you, Jordan!
Varsity and a few JV pictures posted at the "District Game Pictures"
link at left.
Panthers fall to Klein Forest 65-57
Once again the Panthers played hard and kept it close down to the wire
but couldn't pull off the upset.
Unfortunately the other Panther teams fared no better than the varsity.
The JV and Freshmen Gold games were within reach but both slipped away
by just a few points in the end.
Pictures are posted for all games at
the district game pictures link at left.
Panthers drop another heartbreaker to Westfield
67-63
Our Panthers are really good at first halves against Westfield. In each
of the last three contests we have had a lead. This time it was courtesy
of a brilliant 22 point first half by Panther guard Zach Price. But the
Mustangs clamped down on Zach in the 2nd half and several turnovers down
the stretch cost them the game.
The JV Panthers suffered a similar fate, falling by four in a back and
forth contest. More great basketball. It was just the final scores that
were disappointing.

We will also be in need of people to handle
spirit items and the coordination of next year’s banquet.
Panthers fall to Tomball 73-34
This one was never close as the Panthers dug themselves a 12-2 hole in
the first quarter. Let's regroup and go get Westfield on Friday.
Congratulations to the Panther JV team for another win on the road at
Tomball!
PANTHERS BEAT KLEIN! 68-58 in O.T.!
It was a come from behind win for the Panthers. All the frustrations -
the close loses - evaporated for the Panthers as Amish Maknojia calmly
dropped a floating 3 pointer in the bottom of the net as the buzzer
sounded in regulation, tying the game at 49! Way to go, Amish!
Amish came up big in the overtime period also, but so did all his
Panther teammates as the Panthers scored on every single possession in
the four minute overtime. The Panthers dropped their shots - mostly
layups - and made nearly all their free throws. It was an amazing
performance for a team that often didn't appear to know how to finish in
the preceding weeks. Awesome job, guys! Build on it and let's grab some
more wins down the stretch!
The Panther JV once again came through with a clutch win down the
stretch. It was exciting but the Panthers prevailed by two! Nice work,
Panthers!
That one was a landslide compare to the one point victory on two free
throws with a fraction of a second left by the Freshmen Black Panthers.
That avenged an earlier loss over at Klein. Way to go, Panthers!
Varsity pictures are posted. Others are coming soon. Click the district
game pictures link at left. Also posted are team pictures and rosters
for the sophomore and both freshmen teams. Click the links above.
Panthers fall to Collins 86-59
The Panthers dug themselves a 31-11 hole after the first quarter and
couldn't climb out of it.
Congratulations to the JV Panthers on a come-from-behind victory over
the Tigers. You're awesome, Panthers!
Same story, Panthers fall to Spring 81-57
If you think this is getting old, Panther fans, consider what it's like
for our players. Unbelievably a team that was playing excellent
basketball a month, with an 11-5 record, is now 11-12. As President
Obama noted about the economy though, all the essentials are still there
and success is still very possible, we've just got to get this thing
turned around!
This night the Panthers rallied to cut the Lion lead to 57-50 in the
middle of the 4th quarter and it looked like it would be a thrilling
finish. It wasn't, as the Lions outscored our guys 24-7 down the
stretch. It wasn't pretty.
The only bright spot of the evening for Panther fans was another
excellent performance by the Freshmen Black squad. They soundly defeated
Spring 73-57. Nice work, gentlemen!
Pictures are posted. Click the district game pictures link at left.
JV and Sophomore game times reversed on Friday!
To accommodate the NHS induction at Klein Oak, which happily involves
many of our JV players, Spring has graciously allowed us to switch these
game times. So the JV will play at 4 pm and the Sophomores at 5:30.
Panthers drop another close one, losing to Dekaney
80-77
Most Panther fans would have been confident that if they could score 77
points the win was in the bag. But tonight they surrendered way too many
uncontested layups. That was the difference.
The other Panther teams fared no better as Dekaney got the sweep.
Pictures are or will be posted in the District Games gallery (see link
at left). [Note that some sophomore game pics were originally missing.]
The Panthers will regroup to travel to Spring on Friday night.
Panthers can't pull the upset, fall to K.F. 65-54
The Panthers had a lead after a quarter and trailed by just one at the
half before falling by eleven.
Panthers suffer another heartbreaker against
Westfield 59-53.
The Panthers just can't catch a break. It was an excellent game and the
Panthers played hard, and well. Once again it wasn't enough down the
stretch. The Panthers held a 4th quarter lead and the game was tied with
about three minutes left but then things turned south. Nothing to do but
regroup, get your heads up, and get determined to upset Klein Forest on
the road Friday night. You can do it, Panthers!
We got our JV warriors back, Panther fans. It was an awesome game all
the way. Westfield is plenty good but the Panthers were not to be denied
in the crucial final minutes and pulled away for the win! Way to go,
Panthers!
The Freshmen Black also got a great win against a good Westfield team!
It was back and forth the whole game but the Panthers were strong down
the stretch to claim the 66-60 win. Nice work, Panthers!
The Freshmen Gold played really well but suffered a couple of scoring
droughts which cost them the decision. This group is improving, though,
so it's just a matter of time.
Pictures are now all posted.
Click the "District Game Pictures" link at left.
Panthers fall to Tomball 58-43
It was just a tough night for the Panthers. It started well, 5-0, but
then turnovers and a lack of rebounds resulted in the Panthers managing
just 14 points at the half. The defense,
though, was impressive and Tomball had just 20 at the half.
The 2nd half saw Tomball jump to a 10 point lead before the Panthers
rallied to close it to just one. But that lasted only seconds with
Tomball hitting one of many threes. The Panthers could never mount
another challenge.
Sadly the JV's impressive run came to a close in a strange game in which
our guys just appeared completely flat. Why? They still had a chance to
win at the end but really appeared disinterested. That's not the team we
have been treated to in these last weeks. We hope to get the real
Panthers back on Tuesday!
Congratulations to the Freshmen Black Panthers on an impressive 62-38 rout of
the Cougars. It was close for a half but then the Panthers put on a
clinic. Nice work, gentlemen!
All pictures will be posted in the District gallery - see link at left
or click
here. Thanks to Karen Wilkerson for the pictures added to the
Freshmen Gold and Black galleries on Monday 1-12-09! Karen is getting
good at capturing memories in that dark gym #2! Thanks to Greg Francis
for the Sophomore and JV team pics!
Panthers lose a heartbreaker at Klein 52-50.
First things first. Daverick, this was not your fault. Get your head up,
young man. We need you ... badly! We believe in you ... totally!
The Panthers jumped to an 18-5 1st quarter lead but then the Bearkats
tightened their defense - as they always do - and things got
progressively tighter until the game was tied in the 3rd quarter. The
Panthers showed grit in regaining the lead. Too many mistakes, though,
in the final quarter - including about 33% from the line - cost the
Panthers the game. Let's give credit where it is due - both teams played
well and it was a great game, but the Bearkats were outstanding down the
stretch and deserved the win.
Panthers, we believe in you. There are 12 games left and we need to
count down to 8 wins. You can do that, no doubt about it. It starts
Friday against Tomball. Let's go Oak!
On a happier note, the JV Panthers were once again inspiring in a
rousing 67-61 win against a very good bunch of Klein Bearkats. It was
far from easy but somehow these guys just seem to make the plays they
need when they need them. This team that started the season 0-2 is now
11-4. Awesome!
All pictures will be posted in the District gallery - see link at left
or click
here. It takes several hours to prepare a gallery so please be
patient.
Panthers fall to Collins 61-55 to open district.
This shouldn't have happened. The Panthers controlled most of this game,
although it was always close. But due to turnovers, a
rebounding deficit, and missed free throws down the stretch the Panther
lead evaporated. The Tigers finished the game with a 9-0 run to claim
the win. Hang in
there, Panthers. We believe in you!
The JV, on the other hand, took care of business in impressive fashion
with a 14 point victory over Collins. Special kudos to Joe Loisel for
taking things into his own hands and executing with tenacity whenever
things seemed to be getting dicey. Also notable was Brandon Harris's
nice work at the point and everyone's efforts at the free throw line.
Another great team win for the 10-4 Panthers!
Unfortunately the sophomore and both freshmen teams fell to Collins
although everything was close enough to expect a good chance at a
victory in the 2nd round of play.
Panthers beat Conroe and Oak Ridge to grab 5th place in
Conroe Classic!
DaVerick Hunt puts an exclamation point on the
Conroe win!
Congratulations, Panthers! You're awesome!
The first game of the day pitted the Panthers against the home Conroe
Tigers. It was a now familiar pattern with the Panthers dominating the
early going and then facing a scoring drought due to missed layups and
turnovers. Still the Panthers spurted to a 9 point halftime lead. The
Tigers nailed a bunch of threes down the stretch to keep it close before
the Panthers prevailed 75-67. Nice win, gentlemen!
Photo gallery.
In the second game the Panthers faced a good
Oak Ridge team that had defeated them decisively in the first
game of the season at Klein Oak. But this time it was different.
It took two overtimes to get the job done, but the Panthers
prevailed 69-60 to extract some revenge!
Panthers, we are very proud of you! It has
been a long time since a Klein Oak team could boast a record
like 11-5.
It should be an exciting district season. For
the first time n many years we will have a chance to win every
night! Play defense, rebound and GO!
Panthers down Nimitz before falling to Morton Ranch
on Monday in the Conroe Classic.
The Panthers controlled the early going against Nimitz but clearly were
out of gas in the 2nd half. Still they managed to rally down the stretch
for a four point win over the Cougars.
Photo gallery.
Fatigue was definitely the enemy 1.5 hours later against a good Morton
Ranch team. The Panthers trailed the whole way and lost game two by
16.
Photo gallery.
The Panthers will regroup in time to play again on Tuesday at noon at
"The Pit" in Conroe. Come on out and support the Panthers!
Panthers face Nimitz in 1st round of Conroe
Tournament!
Come on out to Conroe for the 10:30 am tip on Monday, December 29th as
the Panthers take on the Nimitz Cougars! Let's go Oak!
The Panthers will play twice on Monday and twice on Tuesday in this
tournament.
Click for the tournament bracket. To get to Conroe HS, travel north

Panthers celebrate by pounding Katy 75-40!
The varsity started slowly but it didn't take them long to establish a
pattern of domination for the game. Other than a slow start again for
the 2nd half, it was all Panthers. And it was just what Coach Martin
wants - play defense, rebound and GO! Interestingly that's exactly the
formula for success KO employed in the 1980s under Coach Rick Penny.
What's old is new again, it's working, and boy is it fun to watch!
Thanks, Panthers, for bringing KO basketball back. Keep believing and
enjoy your holiday!
The JV got in the spirit also by KOing Katy 76-53. It was the same
formula used by the varsity, with the same result. Dedication and
selfless play are paying off for this group, now 9-4 on the season
despite a 0-2 start. We're proud of you, Panthers!
The Sophomores were even better than the 48-35 final score victory would
suggest. If this group will work on finishing they will have something
special going. The talent and athleticism is obvious.
Your reported doesn't have scores yet for the freshmen games.
The varsity Panthers took command from the opening
tip and controlled the game. The Trojans, though, hung in there until
late in the third quarter. The Panthers pulled away and were able to
make sure everyone got some court time. Great team win, Panthers!
The JV Panthers were also impressive in leading most
of the way en route to a 67-49 win over the Trojans. Congratulations,
Panthers!
The Sophomores also notched a one-sided 46-29 win on
Monday night. Nice work, Panthers!
Photo galleries. The Freshmen Black, Sophomore (thanks to Mrs.
Carlson!) JV and Varssity galleries are posted. Freshmen Gold coming!
Panther JV impressive in twin wins!
The JV Panthers set a recent KO scoring record with
93 points on Friday against Cy-Spring (a 93-70 victory).
The JV then faced a very good team from Memorial
(Spring Branch), resulting in a truly great game. Memorial was bigger
and stronger - these are stout guys! - and our Panthers were -
well - smaller and more athletic.
An even game for the first half, the Mustangs dominated the third
quarter. Our Panthers had every opportunity to fold, trailing 43-34
entering the final period. They were very frustrated. Would they quit?
Not this team!
They turned up the pressure, the defense, and the concentration level
and somehow tied it at 55 with 1:20 remaining. Despite two turnovers
down the stretch which tested the Panther defense, they had a final
chance down 56-55. Brandon Harris - the smallest guy on the floor - by a
lot - drove down the lane and lofted a soft shot off the glass and into
the hoop with 2.6 seconds remaining to give the Panthers an unbelievable
win! Thanks, Brandon, and nice job, gentlemen!
Photo gallery!
Unfortunately the Panthers came up just short of a
second comeback of the day, falling to Klein Forest by four in the
consolation championship game.
Panthers spank C.E. King in Dayton!
The Panthers faced off against a C.E. King team for
the 2nd time this season. The first time the Panthers turned the ball
over too many times - and were victimized by a scoring error and an
officiating error - resulting in a loss that shouldn't have happened.
This time it was different as the Panthers jumped out to a 47-23
halftime lead and coasted to a 73-44 victory. The win gave the Panthers
the consolation title of the Dayton Tournament. Nice work, Panthers!
Parents - Please attend Booster Club Meeting!
Our next booster club meeting will be held on
Wednesday December 17 at 7:00 p.m. (note the time change).
It is with great regret we have had to accept the
resignation of our secretary Marie Bullock. We will be holding open
floor nominations and voting on a new secretary for our board. If you

Panthers fall to Huntsville at Dayton Tournament
The Panthers were facing the defending tournament
champion Huntsville Hornets. They stayed with them until the final few
minutes but ultimately lost 68-55.
Because one of the teams dropped out of the
tournament the Panthers will only play once more, for the consolation
championship, at Dayton at 4 pm on Friday.
The JV Panthers faced a very good Humble team - the
bracket was changed at the last minute - and led the entire first half
before falling behind by 12 in the 4th quarter. The Wildcats were able
to lay it up too many times to offset the impressive Panther 1/2 court
trap. The Panther rally closed the lead to four points but they couldn't
pull it off, losing by a final score of 71-61. The Panthers will play
again on Friday at 6 pm (unless Spring changes the bracket again).
Photo gallery.
Panthers down Baytown Lee 61-49!
The JV Panthers scored their fifth win in a row with
a 20+ point win at Lee. Contratulations to both teams!
Correction! The Freshmen Black defeated Lee 52-46!
Game time notes, etc.
Baytown Lee has cancelled the Freshmen "B" (Gold team
for us) game. The Freshmen Black game will be at 4 pm, the Sophomore and
JV games at 5:30 and the Varsity at 7 pm.
The varsity tournament brackets for Dayton and Conroe
have been posted. See the varsity
schedule page.
JV Wins Manvel Tournament!
The JV team won the Manvel Tournament defeating a
tough DeKaney team 68-63. Down by 11 in the fourth quarter they
fought back to win the game, scoring 29 points in the fourth. They
came back with team work and tough defense.
The team played four games and had four different
leading scorers.
Game 1 KOHS 65 - Manvel 49 - Leading scorer Pitts 16
Game 2 KOHS 76 - Kingwood Park 56 - Leading scorer May 19
Game 3 KOHS 65 - Channelview 38 - Leading scorer Loisel 17
Championship KOHS 68 - DeKaney 63 - Leading scorer T. Thevenin 17
Leading tournament scorer Harris 49
This was a total team effort with unselfish play and
great defense.
Congratulation Panthers!
December 6th Tournament Updates
The Varsity defeated Mayde Creek 73-66 in a
consolation game in the Katy Tournament. It was a very competitive game
against a good Mayde Creek team. The Panthers, though, led the whole way
despite a Ram rally in the 4th quarter. Nice work, Panthers!
Photo gallery.
The JV Panthers made it to the championship game of
the Manvel JV Tournament by notching their third consecutive victory on
Friday. Saturday's result is not known yet.
No news yet on the Freshmen Black in the Klein
Tournament.
The varsity suffered a disappointing loss to C.E.
King on Friday. After a good start the Panthers went into a drought and
found themselves down 17 entering the final period. They rallied to cut
it to 4 before falling 72-62.
The Panther JVs notched their first two victories of
the season as this talented group got on track! The first win was over
the host team from Manvel. Details and Friday's result to follow.
The Freshmen Black Panthers defeated Cy-Creek in the
1st round of the Klein ISD Tournament in the strangest game your
reporter has seen in a long time. The Panthers roared out of the block
and took a 39-19 lead, then fell behind 63-45, trailed 67-52 entering
the final quarter, and then won 79-75. Go figure! Congratulations,
though, gentlemen for your heart and determination. Only a very special
group of young men could fight their way back from that kind of
adversity! We're very proud of you! Keep it going!
The varsity played a very good Harker Heights team
Thursday night. Despite being down by 12 heading into the final quarter,
they cut it to four in the final two minutes before falling 56-49.
The Panthers will play a 2nd round game in the Katy
Tournament on Friday at 3:30.
Panthers score two great wins in Tyler!
The varsity defeated Edgewood 68-56 on Friday.
In a come-from-behind, overtime win, the Panthers
defeated Longview Pinetree 59-54 on Saturday.
Way to go, Oak! The Panthers move their season record
to 3-1!
Panthers rally to beat Magnolia 72-63!
Congratulations, gentlemen. It was a great win!
After a slow start the Panthers jumped out to a slim
lead at the half and still lead after three quarters. But the Bulldogs
came roaring back to take a 4th quarter lead before the Panthers showed
their athleticism and determination down the stretch to secure the win!
The JV suffered a really tough loss. A really slow
start proved costly as the Panthers just couldn't get back on top
despite a valiant effort in the 4th quarter. Hang in there guys. Those
of us who have watched you through summer league know that the remainder
of the season will be yours!
The Sophomore Panthers, trailing by 17 at the half,
also proved their mettle with a come-from-behind win. Way to go,
Panthers!
The Freshmen Black team won by about 20, but the game
was closer than that. Our guys turned it on at the end in impressive
fashion.
We are proud of, and very thankful for, all the young
men of Klein Oak Basketball. It's going to be a great season! Happy
Thanksgiving!
Photo galleries. (Note that more freshmen pics are coming.)
Panthers fall to Oak Ridge 70-65.
It was a disappointing loss caused by an extremely
slow start. The Panthers appeared tentative and therefore made way too
many mistakes in the first half. They trailed at the half 39-22. Then
the Panthers turned up the heat and started playing with confidence,
tying the score at 49! Unfortunately a spent bunch of Panthers couldn't
finish the deal and fell by five.
Varsity, JV and Sophomore pictures are posted
here. Others coming soon!

Panthers come up short in overtime at Westfield 67-63
For most of the game it looked like the Panthers had
this spoilers role down pat, poised to knock the Mustangs out of the
playoffs. They led my 12 in the 2nd quarter and took a nice nine point
lead at the half.
But it didn't last long. Credit the Mustangs who
responded to the challenge with some spectacular shooting in the 2nd
half. The Panthers helped them some with too many turnovers, but it was
mostly the Mustangs who just grabbed this game.
We never like to emphasize one player because
basketball is the ultimate team game, but your webmaster has to
recognize the performance of Cameron Rogers. 22 points - not one of them
the result of selfishness, just stellar play (9 for 14 from the field
and 2 for 2 from the line) - and some really great assists (5). Nice
work young man! If this is a sign of what to expect next year, November
can't come too soon.
Thanks to all our Panthers for your diligence and hard
work over this season. The Panther Basketball program is in good hands
and next year is going to be very exciting at the Oak!
Photos are posted in the district gallery! [Thanks to
Greg Francis for all the great pictures this year!]
Panthers can't overcome Collins - 39-56
It was another one of those games that saw the
Panthers compete valiantly against one of the state's top teams. And
another game that slipped out of reach due to missed free throws and
layups.
Congratulations to the Freshmen Black team for a
convincing win over Collins, avenging one that got away in the first
round!
Pictures are coming, but they aren't there yet.
Panthers fall to Spring 59-43
It was tied at the half 24-24, but the 3rd quarter was
a disaster for the Panthers as the Lions tossed in 22 while the Panthers
struggled to score.
Congratulations to the Sophomore team for a
hard-fought victory on the road!
Photos of all levels are posted in the district
gallery.
Eagles deflect Panthers' best shot
For three quarters the Panthers gave one of the best
teams around all they could handle. But the Golden Eagles showed why
they are so highly ranked in the 4th quarter, burying the Panthers
beneath an avalanche of threes. Nevertheless, Panther fans have to be
extremely proud of our guys for this outstanding effort.
Congratulations to Coach Cary Black (K.O. class of
'87) and the Golden Eagles. Good luck in the playoffs!
Pictures from all levels are posted in the district
gallery (link at left).

Panthers fall to Klein 37-35
This just shouldn't have happened, but
it's clear why it did.
The Panthers, who led 27-21 and 33-29,
made just two field goals and were 3 for 7 from the free throw line in
the 4th quarter. Way too many missed layups.
The effort, though, was excellent on both
sides. Congratulations to the Bearkats for a hard-fought victory.
The (extremely) bright spot for Panther
Basketball tonight was another stellar performance by the Junior
Varsity. Nice work, gentlemen!
Some of the pictures are uploaded, but
more are coming from Greg Francis!
Panthers come up just short in great Tomball game
Just three weeks ago the Panthers found
themselves down 35-15 at the half against the Cougars. Tonight they took
a 20-16 lead into halftime. Although they couldn't pull it off, falling
52-46 in the end, the improvement is amazing, as was the effort.
We're really proud of you, Panthers. You
are warriors.
And how about those JV Panthers! They
pulled off an impressive win tonight after dropping the first game
76-45! Way to go, Panthers!
Both freshmen teams also won tonight, with
the Gold team avenging a 1st round loss at Tomball. And the sophomores
came ever so close to avenging an earlier loss in another tremendous
effort.
Overall it was a night that made manifest
the tremendous improvement in our program that our players and coaches
have worked so hard to achieve. Keep up the good work, gentlemen!
Panthers drop overtime heartbreaker to Westfield
Were it not for the Panthers spotting the
Mustangs a 14-0 lead to start the game, it would have been different. As
it was they spent the rest of the game playing catch up.
But with the Panthers trailing by three
and the clock running down, Cameron Rogers found Zach Price. Zach
carefully toed behind the line and calmly deposited the ball in the
bottom of the net to give the Panthers new life. Despite a lead in the
overtime period, however, they couldn't quite pull of the upset, falling
67-62.
It was a great game, and a testament to
the heart and potential of this young Panther team. We're proud of you,
Panthers!
Panthers fall to Collins
Despite a tremendous effort by our
Panthers - We're proud of you, guys! - our Panthers fell to Collins
73-40.
The sub-varsity teams fared the same in
the final score. Once again we are proud of the efforts of all these
young men. Hang in there, Panthers!
All district photos are now uploaded to

A note to our webmaster, Gary Nelson
On behalf of the Klein Oak

guys, dust yourself off and get ready to tame the Lions!
A personal note from your webmaster.
I'm going to
be absent for a week or so. My 85 year old mother died on Wednesday and I
really need to be with my 90 year old (on 1-23-08!) father, who is
legally blind. I have some work to do also in dealing with the estate in
Ohio.
I'm posting
pictures of the Klein games without the usual edits just because I don't
have time to do them. I think you'll like them anyway.
Greg Francis
will be taking control of the Website in my absence, but please
understand that he can't control all of this and he'll be doing the best
he can.
I'll be
thinking of you, Panthers! Let's get some more wins!
Panthers Beat Klein 44-39!
Congratulations, Panthers! That was a huge victory! Special kudos for a
really nice job at the free throw line down the stretch after the
Bearkats made a game of it by hitting two big threes.
Congratulations also to the J.V. Panthers and the Freshmen Black
Panthers for big wins over the neighborhood rival Bearkats on Tuesday
night!
The Panthers travel to Klein Forest to
take on the Golden Eagles on Friday. Lace 'em up tight, gentlemen!

good College Park team all they could handle on Monday night before

We're also
especially proud of the Freshmen Black Panthers. This talented group had
lost to College Park by three on Saturday, but they evened the score
with a scratch and claw 58-53 win on Monday night! Way to go, Panthers!
Character shows.
Speaking of
character, all of our Panthers made us proud Monday night. Each team
showed plenty of potential and lots of fight. Thanks, guys! The future

tight guys! Let's go compete! It's a new day for KO Basketball!
Welcome,
Coach Joey Martin!
We're
pleased to have Coach Martin at KO!
Thanks,
Coach Martin, for contacting me. Here's part of what he had to say:
"My wife, Tami Martin, and I are very excited about the opportunity
to work at Klein Oak HS. We have four children that are very excited
also. Our oldest daughter Taylor is 12 and will be in the 7th grade, our
"boy girl twins" Samuel and Savanna are 7 and will be in the 2nd grade.
Our newest addition, Houston, is 4 months. I don't know if it was a
coincidence or not that we named our last child "Houston," even though
we call him "Hoot".
Take a look at
part of Coach Martin's resume. It's very impressive!
Thanks to
Coach Lair Crawford for handling a difficult situation with his usual
professionalism. He's been our head guy through the spring and we
appreciate all he's done. We hope, Lair, that you'll stay and provide
some continuity in our program. Plus, we're lucky to have you at KO!

Congratulations Panthers! A great Senior Night victory! We're very proud of you!
The Panthers
wanted this one badly, but found themselves trailing by eight at the
half. But heart won out as the Panthers stormed back in the 3rd quarter
to take a five point lead into the 4th. Then they weathered the storm of
a strong Spring comeback to grab the victory down the stretch 58-51!
It was a
great total team effort and a testament to the heart and character of

Special
Kudos to the Varsity after Collins game!
Unfortunately it wasn't a win on the scoreboard. But in the 23 years
your Webmaster has watched KO varsity basketball (every game but five -
and I was scouting those nights) I have never been more proud of a KO
team than I was Friday night. Folks, these
young men are warriors! Having been through so much, and
playing with only 8 players for the second game in a day, the kind of
effort we saw on Friday was miraculous. And inspiring. I know who my
sports heroes are.
Kudos also
to Coach Host and Coach Crawford for getting our guys ready to show
their best. Well, not quite their best. That's coming!

We have a
bunch of changes. Some are there now. Others are coming.
The Varsity
has dropped the Texas Invitational at Pasadena and replaced it with the
Magnolia Tournament!
Head Coach Tim Host!
We could hardly believe our good fortune two years ago at being able to
hire Tim Host as our 2nd assistant. Why? He had already been "Assistant
Coach of the Year" under Chris Bailes (Spring H.S.), a head coach, and
the leader of the TABC basketball camp. Now we are proud to announce
that this terrific, state-recognized, coach is the leader of the
Panthers!
Coach Crawford comes to K.O. after two
years as the head coach at Anahuac HS. He will coach the J.V. Panthers
and serve as Assistant Head Coach for the varsity. Welcome, Coach
Crawford! (Click here for more
information.)
Coaching Changes
It's hard to say goodbye to good friends, but
we certainly wish all the best to Head Coach Steve Dibble, Assistant Head Coach
Bill Bloodworth, and Coach Jim Barber.
Steve
Dibble has led the Panther program for the last three years. We made
considerable progress during that period as Coach Dibble set high
standards for competitiveness and conduct. It showed. Coach Dibble
decided to move closer to home, taking the Varsity Assistant's job at
Cy-Ridge H.S. (He will also be the head cross country coach.)
Note from
Coach Dibble.
Bill
Bloodworth was the Assistant Head Coach under former Coach Ken Butts
(one year) and Coach Dibble (three years). During the Dibble years,
Coach Bloodworth controlled the offense and called the plays. Coach
Dibble always said "We have three head coaches" (including Coach Tim
Host). We'll miss you, Coach Blood! Coach Bloodworth took the head golf
coach job at Elkins H.S.
Jim Barber
was only at Oak for a year, but he did a great job with our Sophomore
team and we'll miss him. He took a new football position in the Ft. Bend
district.
Some of these positions have already been
filled, but I'll let our new head coach make the announcement. It's coming
shortly!
Our Panthers
went out winners Tuesday night in their home gym with a hard fought,
emotional 49-41 victory over a tough bunch of New Caney Eagles.
The task was
made tougher as the Panthers shooting touch vanished at the half. 2nd
half numbers: 22% from 2 point range, 14% from three, and 57% from the
free throw line. Coach Dibble preaches that when the shots aren't
falling, you can depend on defense and hustle on the boards. That's
exactly what won the game down the stretch. The Panthers really
demonstrated their heart and mental toughness in their final night on
the court.
Great job,
gentlemen! We are so proud of you! The 2005-2006 season is gone, but it
will not be forgotten. Neither will the tremendous young men who made 34
games seem too few.
Congratulations, Freshmen Gold - Undefeated
District 18-4A Champs!
Does someone
have stats on how many steals these guys had this season? Wow! You were
a treat to watch! And the future looks really good from here!
Panthers down Willis on the Road!
The Panthers
faced an inspired and determined senior night effort from the Wildkats
of Willis. Tough defense on both sides was the order of the night. The
Panthers prevailed 52-44.
Great job,
Panthers! We're proud of you!
The Panthers
will finish the 2006 season Tuesday night at home against New Caney.
Panthers battle hard but fall to Brenham
75-51
Facing the
#4 team in the state in their home gym, and without the services of Kyle
Flores, the Panthers knew the task was formidable.
The effort was
outstanding. The execution failed for a few spurts, costing the Panthers
a chance at the upset. The 24 turnovers were too costly to overcome.
Overall, though, the Panthers did well against the tough Brenham
pressure.
We're proud of
you, Panthers! Now let's get two wins to finish this season with pride!
Panthers fall to Waller 63-58
A slow start
cost the Panthers a chance to win this one. The Panther turned the ball
over twice in the first 30 seconds and 13 times the first half.
The game,
though, was very much in doubt down to the last moment as the Panthers
fought hard the second half but just didn't seem to be able to get the
shots to drop. Specifically a 21% shooting performance from three point
range hurt drastically.
The Panthers
will have to regroup by Tuesday as they face the #4 state ranked Brenham
Cubs in their home gym. Go get 'em Panthers, we have only glory to gain!
Panthers drown Caney Creek!
77-39, to be
exact. Great job, Panthers! Totally team, and totally characteristic of
our Panthers!
Coach Dibble
was concerned about complacency after the easy victory at home earlier
in the season. He needn't have been. The Panthers took care of business
from the starting tip, won by Kyle, to the tune of a 23-11 1st quarter
lead and a 40-18 halftime advantage.
Coach Dibble
challenged our guys to win it with defense the 2nd half. Caney Creek
didn't score until well after the starters were pulled in the 3rd
quarter. Then they did get a little hot, but not for poor Panther
defense; they just started hitting shots once the issue was well out of
doubt.
Great job by
everyone! 9 Panthers scored. 10 Panthers rebounded. 9 Panthers had
assists. 7 Panthers had steals. 57% from 2 point range, 54% from 3 point
range, 72% from the FT line. Wow!
What can we
say? The Panthers lost 74-65 after holding a three point lead at 34-31
at the half. That was the pace we needed.
But
Livingston put up 25 points (to the Panthers 15) in the 3rd quarter as
they got layup after layup. It was too much for the Panthers to
overcome, although the effort was heroic. And the game was much closer
than the final margin indicates.
The effort
was there, and the Panthers did play well, the Panthers simply didn't
shoot the ball well. 37% from two point range will not beat good teams.
It just wasn't falling for us. End of story.
Friday Schedule Changes
Freshmen
Gold will play at 5:30 against Livingston.
Sophomores
will play at 4:00 against Montgomery. See the Sophomore Schedule for
future games.
Panthers fall to Montgomery
This hurts
too much for any words. It hurts simply because it probably shuts the
door for an unbelievably awesome group of Panthers. We hurt for all of
them, but especially the seniors.
The Panthers
led the entire game, except for a moment at 20-19, and then at the
buzzer 62-61. A buzzer beater by a resilient Montgomery Bear team tore
the hearts from the Panthers. It happened on the 5th shot of their last
possession. That's hard to take, especially after leading by six with
1:20 remaining.
The only
thing we're sure about at this point is that we are hurting so much
because these Panthers mean so much. We love you guys more than words
can ever express. We are so proud of you, because of who you are but
also because that was probably the best game our Panthers have played
all year. So much promise!
We do want
to tip our hats to the Bears, a great team that refused to fold on the
road. You certainly earned our respect. And we wish you the best down
the road.
Panthers 59, New Caney 50
Awesome road
win, Panthers! What a way to end the toughest week in KO history!
The Panthers
never trailed for two possessions. They held Jayson Baker, perhaps the
most dominant player in our district, to 10 points.
It wasn't
easy. New Caney plays great defense. And a 15 point lead in the mid 4th
quarter was cut to 5 in the last minute. The Panthers didn't panic. They
took care of business at the free throw line (18 for 22 in the 4th
quarter!), and secured the victory. Nice work.
The Panthers
are two games (in the loss column) out of 2nd place at the turn, with 7
games remaining. Three of the next four games are at home. Remaining
road games are at Caney Creek, Brenham and Willis.
If needed
the Willis game will be finished. The Panthers had a 13 point lead with
7:29 to play at home against Willis.
Updates 2
Jarrett
(the Willis player) was released from the hospital on Thursday. He is
resting comfortably at home.
Mrs.
Harrison, the wife of the Willis head coach, sent a wonderful e-mail
message to KO Principal Jean Heiskell.
Click here to read that message (with her permission).
Prayer Warriors Needed!
With 7:31
remaining in the game and the Panthers holding a 40-27 lead, basketball
ceased to be important. A Willis player collapsed on the sidelines after
coming out of the game complaining of chest pain.
KO trainer
Brian Marr treated the player courtside, later joined by two volunteer
firemen. [You're our hero, "Doc"!] The young man was semi-conscious and
responsive, breathing on his own. CPR and defib were ready but not
needed. The two teams joined together in a prayer circle.
After the
ambulance finally arrived, the young man was transported to The
Woodlands hospital. Another prayer circle was joined at mid-court by
most of those in attendance. The game was suspended. Nobody was in much
of a mood for basketball at that point. Many of the Klein Oak players
headed to the hospital to stand beside their stricken opponent and his
family.
Our thoughts
and prayers are with the Willis player involved, his family, and his
teammates.
And,
Panthers, we thank God for you. I'm so
thankful it wasn't one of you. And I'm in awe of the way you represented
Klein Oak tonight. Class, Character, and Excellence is our school
slogan. You set a new standard tonight, under the most trying
circumstances. It's a standard the rest of us will have a nearly
impossible challenge meeting. Thank you!
We miss you, Kevin.
Klein Oak lost yet another student, Kevin
Chambers, on Saturday night due to a traffic accident. This one hits especially
hard at KO Basketball because Kevin wanted to be a part of this program.
Ineligibility prevented that. But Kevin had his academic life turned around this
year before his life on earth was tragically ended Saturday night. Our prayers
are with Kevin's family and friends, and especially with his twin brother Kyle.
Panthers, you are infinitely precious to all of
us. You are not immortal. Kevin was so alive and full of promise on Friday. Now
he's gone. Please learn from this and don't take any actions which could
endanger your life. You are way too precious to lose. Honestly, we don't know
how we could go on without each of you. Basketball is important, but it's not
the most important thing. Just ask Kyle Chambers about what's important. Then
pray for him. Please.
We will observe a moment of silence for Kevin
before Tuesday's home game against Willis. Parents, please help us to drive the
message here home. Right now, forcefully. And pass it along.
Heroic effort buried by 3s as Panthers fall
to Brenham
Against the
#5 ranked team in the state you have to play hard, play well, and get
lucky. The Panthers checked off the first two. But after cutting the Cub
lead to 49-40 in the 3rd quarter, the Cubs responded as you might
expect, unleashing 8 threes over the last 7 minutes to put the game well
out of reach.
The final
score 93-58 unfortunately doesn't reflect how competitive the game
really was, but those who saw it had to have left with great respect for
the Panthers. Nice job, guys! We are very proud of you!
for some pictures.
The Panthers
are in a hole at 1-4, but far from out of it. The schedule now is in our
favor. In fact last year's team was 0-5 over these same games. The
schedule is flipped this year; last year's team lost the first five
games of the 2nd round. So it's time to get on a roll, Panthers, and win
the last two games of round one, then duplicate the 3-0 start of last
year's group, but this time in round two. Hang on!
Congratulations to the Freshmen Gold Panthers on another victory. We
call them "the machine" around here!
Click
for some pictures. The Freshmen Black team hit a scoring drought at
the wrong time (click
for pictures) and fell to the Cubs, as did the JV. But it was a
great effort on all levels.
New Scoreboards!
Thanks to
the booster club for ordering new scoreboards for the KO gym! That is a
huge improvement for our program, and all the other programs what will
benefit from the much needed improvement!
Special
thanks to Mike Rayburn for making it all possible by finding a matching
funds sponsor!
Panthers fall to Waller 64-50
We just
didn't play well. Mostly we didn't shoot well. 30% from two point range
and 33% from three point range won't win on the road against a fine
opponent like Waller. 27 turnovers didn't help. [We did win the battle
on the boards 43-40, against superior size.]
Lesser teams
would have folded in the 3rd quarter, but our Panthers made us proud,
battling all the way - great defense even when the shots weren't
falling. That's not easy, which is why so few teams do it.
You are warriors, Panthers, and we are proud of every one of you.
Forever. Period.
The Panthers
find themselves at 1-3. That's exactly where last year's 2nd place
Montgomery team was a year ago. We believe in you, Panthers! Believe in
yourselves, pull together, and let's roll!
Panthers dominate Caney Creek 81-44!
We got it
turned around! The Panthers had their backs against the wall, and they
knew it. They responded as we knew they would, with a dominating
victory.
Coach Dibble
asked the Panthers at halftime to get a 30 point lead for the 4th
quarter so we could enjoy a relaxed victory. Ask and ye shall receive!
Way to go, Panthers!
The Panthers
jumped to an 18-4 lead before the turnovers started to pile up. But they
piled up quickly as the Panthers were in a 21-19 hole at the quarter.
After 22 turnover in the 1st half, the Panthers were down by only a
point. Although the turnover situation improved in the 2nd half, the
shooting dropped off as fatigue set in. After trailing by ten in the 4th
quarter, the Panthers clawed back in it, but missed some opportunities
down the stretch to turn things in our favor.
Hang in
there, Panthers. We'll get this going our way. We believe in you!
Panthers 2-2 in Fredericksburg
After a four
hour road trip the Panthers faced a very athletic
Copperas Cove team.
The Panthers seemed to handle the trip well, building a 7 point halftime
lead and a 10 point lead after three periods. But ... "Cove" came back
in the 4th. With the Panthers hanging on down the stretch, Cove mugged
Austin Gracey and threw him to the floor in front of the Panther bench.
Coach Dibble said "You have to call that." It must have struck a nerve.
Instant T. Two free throws tied the game, but the Panther D held on the
last possession. Then the Panthers regrouped and dominated the overtime
for a 69-63 win, much to the relief of a grateful Coach Dibble. Thanks,
guys! And thanks to KO's first coach (Coach Dibble's high school coach),
Rick Penny, for traveling to Fredericksburg for the game. It was great
to have you there, Rick!
After an
emotionally and physically draining opening game, the Panthers were not
at their best against a very good Providence team. And they needed to
be. The Panthers hung in for a half, but were clearly out of gas down
the stretch. The result was a disappointing 60-40 defeat.
A Sonic
dinner, a good night's sleep (despite the best efforts of players from
another team), and a nice breakfast at the Comfort Suites recharged the
batteries for a 9:30 am game against
Vista Ridge
(the new-in-2003 sister school to Cedar Park). So we thought. But the
Panthers were still asleep when the game started. A 10-2 V.R. lead
produced a time out. After a few words of encouragement (!) from the
coaches, the Panthers tied it at 10 at the quarter. A six point lead
after three looked good, but had it tied at the end before they fouled
Matt Evans. Bad choice. A time out to freeze Matt didn't work as he
calmly drained both free throws for the 48-46 win!
The Panthers
saved their best for last. They did everything but outscore a very good
Lake
Travis team. The Panthers had a four point lead and a possession
with a minute remaining before half. Then disaster struck and they dug
themselves a three point hole at the half. That was decisive, but it
doesn't tell the story. The Cavs turned up the heat in the 2nd half. The
Panthers fell to a 12 point deficit, but wouldn't fold. Heart and grit
and great team spirit! The Panthers cut the lead, only to see it balloon
to 12 again in the late 4th quarter. Quit? No way! The Panthers left
everything - absolutely everything - on the floor at Fredericksburg. The
lead was three with seconds left. After a desperate foul, the Cavs
sealed their well deserved 61-56 victory with two free throws. The
Panthers needed one more minute. They didn't win the game, but they won
something much more important.
It was a
great tournament! Thanks to Fredericksburg H.S. for being great hosts!
Thanks to Michelle Bingham for making the trip to serve as our trainer
and to Emily and Kari Dibble for the video! Thanks to all the parents for great support! Thanks to KISD Athletic
Director Robert Young for changing our policy and making this possible!
And thanks, Panthers, for
being the awesome young men you are. Your coaches have always believed
in you, as people and as players. So much more so now after these two
days. You make us very proud, and very thankful for the opportunity to
share this season with you. And very excited about the weeks ahead.
Let's go Oak!
Panthers down Pasadena 57-51
For a while
it looked like the Panthers were going to blow the Eagles away. That was
the 3rd quarter. After a slow start, the Panthers were dominating. But
then we got greedy (?) or something and the game got entirely too close.
But the Panthers caught themselves and made the plays down the stretch
to secure the victory.
It was a win
and we'll take it!
Merry
Christmas, Panthers! Thanks for being young men who make us proud every
day. Be careful and be safe. Let's have a great tournament at
Fredericksburg!
Panthers fall to Montgomery 50-42
The effort
was outstanding. The execution totally frustrating. The Panthers played
just like they practiced this week, and that wasn't good. [Typical,
though, for serious students in exam week.]
Shooting was
abysmal, just like practice. 29% from two point range, 25% from three
point range, 57% from the free throw line. It's just about impossible to
win with that.
Montgomery
wasn't much better, until the 4th quarter. Then they worked their
offense and got layups. We shot threes. Bad idea!
Ouch! Panthers fall to Klein 82-51
First, what
Klein did. 3 point shooting: 100% in the 1st quarter, 71% in the first
half, 62% in the 3rd quarter, 55% for the game. 52% of 2 point shots.
That's most of this game, folks. They were on fire.
The rest of
the game was us. Sometimes, Panthers, you want something so desperately
that it can mess with your mind in a way that makes it impossible to
achieve. Like beating Klein. Your webmaster has been at KO long enough
to understand completely. And I firmly believe that is what happened to
us this night.
We didn't do
what we know how to do, what we know we can do. We didn't keep our poise
in the face of a fast Klein start and so we let it snowball. I
understand that, Panthers, because the team brain cramp ran from the
statistician up.
As Coach
Dibble says, "Don't lose the lesson!" There are many other big games
that we will all desperately want to win - starting with Friday night at
Montgomery. So channel that energy, make it a positive. It begins by
finding a way to let this one go. You have to help one another do that
because it's a team thing. Be there for one another.
Panthers claim Consolation Championship!
Panthers
61, Oak Ridge 45
Wow! What a great team
victory!
The Panthers
had opened the season with a slim 51-47 win at home against the War
Eagles. So a neutral court match up looked even. But the Panthers made
it clear from the outset which team had improved more. The Panthers
jumped out to a 16-4 1st quarter lead, led 35-16 at the half, and 53-25
after three.
Congratulations to Senior Kyle Flores and Junior Austin Gracey
who were selected to the All-Tournament Team! It is a testament to the
awesome team mentality of the Panthers that choosing just two was very
hard to do. So these two accepted the medals on behalf of the team.
Panthers, we
are so very proud of all of you!
Panthers rebound, beat Willis!
The Panthers
got off to a fast start, unlike the previous night, but the Wildkats
wouldn't fold. The game went back and forth between a tie and a six or
eight point Panthers lead. The Panthers were pressed down the
stretch but this time the Panthers gutted up and secured the victory
50-44. Nice work, Panthers!
The Panthers
take on Oak Ridge - for the second time - Saturday at 11:30 at Dayton
H.S. See the varsity schedule for a map.
Panther JV falls to Cy-Springs
The Panthers
faced a very athletic and sharp shooting Cy-Springs team with only 7
players available. The Panthers fought hard, but couldn't keep up and
lost 73-52.
Panthers fall to Vidor 50-46
The Panthers
had a six point lead with four minutes to go but a series of mistakes
down the stretch opened the door for Vidor and cost the Panthers a loss.

Panthers fall just short.
Your
Webmaster was a skeptic, I confess. After watching Pasadena Memorial
obliterate a good Dallas Hillcrest team in a tournament game, I didn't
think our Panthers had a chance. But the Panthers showed incredible
heart against the big, athletic Mavericks and enjoyed a 10 point lead at
the half. Amazing.
Memorial
came roaring back in the 3rd quarter. But the Panthers seemed to weather
the storm, retaking the lead. But - credit to where credit is due - the
Mavericks made the plays down the stretch to escape with a 69-65
victory.
Louie Black
led the Panthers in scoring with 15, followed by Tim Garrett and Kyle
Flores with 11 and 10, respectively. Adrian Cabungcal led on the boards
with 9, followed by Jordan Seal with 8. Austin Gracey led the assists
with 6.
We're proud
of you, Panthers. You have made incredible progress over the last three
weeks!
J.V. Wins 3rd at C.E. King!
Congratulations to the J.V. Panthers for finishing 3rd in the C.E. King
Tournament. The Panthers defeated Dulles 71-56 in the 3rd place game!
Panthers run past Concordia!
The
Crusaders won the warm-up. This is an impressive team in a lot of ways.
They have all the ingredients.
Our Panthers
refused to be intimidated. Coach Dibble promised to "uncork the offense"
and the Panthers obliged with a 72 point performance and a 72-54
victory! It wasn't as easy as it sounds as the Crusaders came back
strong in the 3rd quarter. The Panthers had to respond to the challenge
and they did!
This was
simply a great team victory over a quality opponent. Unselfish play by
all the Panther guards with great dumps to the post! Great defense in
the post against superior size. We out rebounded them! Terrific job,
Panthers!
Not to be
outdone was the Panther JV. In the first impressive, full-game effort of
the season, the Panthers showed their talent.
The Panther
freshmen were also impressive in an 11 point victory, completing the
sweep for Oak!
Free Throw Shoot-a-thon!

Panthers repay Magnolia!
One year ago
the Panther varsity entered the Magnolia game on a four game win streak
and with great confidence. Two hours later they left with a devastating
75-30 loss.
This year's
varsity was determined to avenge that defeat, but turning around such a
loss would take a true TEAM effort. And that they produced, with an
exciting 44-41 victory over the Bulldogs!
Defense!
From 75 points to 41. Magnolia had scored 59 the
night before
against
Brenham. Great work, Panthers! We are very proud of our TEAM, and
thankful for each of its awesome young men!
Highlights?
How about 3 for 4 (including one 3) and 8 rebounds from Kyle Flores. 8
points, 5 rebounds (amazing!) and 4 assists from point guard Austin
Gracey. 7 boards from Jordan Seal.
And
what can we say about Tim Garrett in crunch time? How about 1 for 1 and
6 for 8 from the line? Clutch. Gutsy. Vintage Tim Garrett! Depend on it!
Mr.
Take Charge!
Ask any
coach what stat impresses them most and he will say the "take charge."
Stopping those frustrating layups often means being willing to sacrifice
one's body for the team. That takes uncommon courage; the intuitive
thing is to protect yourself by moving away.
Meet Kyle
Flores! Kyle took his 8th charge of the season, and had two more
attempts, in the Magnolia game. That's 8 charges taken in 9 games. And
that's special.
When not
taking charges Kyle is a 6'2" post working down low against, in every
game thus far, bigger and perhaps stronger guys. Nobody, though, has a
bigger heart than Kyle Flores! It shows. Thanks, Kyle! You are a special
gift to Klein Oak Basketball this year.
Texas Invitational Tourn.
The Panthers
had fun Saturday morning, downing Houston Reagan 61-36 and playing
everyone equal minutes. But they ran out of gas, playing the sixth game
in three days against a very athletic Baytown Sterling team, falling
64-39. [Most of the difference was in the 4th quarter when the Panthers
were just spent.] Still, we're very proud of you, Panthers! You made
great strides of improvement over these three days!
The Panthers
took it on the chin twice again Friday. No, this isn't fun. But tomorrow
will be because the Panthers turned a big corner at halftime of the
second game today. The Panthers play Houston Reagan at 9:00 am at Clear Creek (girls
gym).
See the
bracket for information.
Well, it
wasn't a good start. The Panthers lost twice on Thursday. See the
varsity schedule for details.
The
Varsity came from behind to down Oak Ridge 51-47.
Matt Evans led the way with 15 points and four rebounds. Austin Gracey
was great at point with 11 points and five boards. Jordan Seal led the
rebounding with seven and also had nine points. Great job, Panthers!
The JV and
Freshmen Gold teams also won, while the Sophomores and Freshmen Black
teams fell in close contests.
